Patron Letter

If you are a student requiring production equipment for use on a course assignment ONLY, please continue to the equipment reservation page.

If you require equipment for any other purpose please read below.

Dear respected SMART Learning Commons Patrons:

As we enter the final month of the fall semester (Nov. 17 - Dec. 20), unfortunately, we are only able to provide production equipment loans for the purposes of student-produced course assignments due to high curricular demand. This decision is in line with the primary mission of the SMART Learning Commons to provide a diverse range of quality services (including media production support and media services) to promote student learning through course support.

As part of this mission, we strongly promote the use of student-produced media to support curriculum. As such, we have a responsibility to insure that our limited equipment pool is available to students who may otherwise not have an opportunity to complete their final projects and course assignments.

That said, in the spirit of resource sharing, promoting media production skills, and to be more efficient with our resources, during times of the year when we have some excess capacity and students are not producing as much media for coursework (typically most of the year outside of the last 6 weeks of the fall/spring semesters), we do provide the campus community free access to these resources to include additional purposes 1 (e.g., taping student group events, faculty lectures, research interviews, promoting department services). While these activities go beyond our initially intended service, we recognize the value they provide and thus, encourage patrons to check back at the conclusion of the semester for equipment availability.

For alternative equipment availability, if you are a member of CLA, you might have access to additional production equipment through Studio E. In addition, production equipment is also available to all University affiliates for rent through the Office of Classroom Management A/V Rental Service.

We apologize for the inconvenience, and appreciate your understanding.

Sincerely,

Scott Spicer

Media Outreach and Learning Spaces Librarian

If you have additional questions, please contact Jim Hatten or Scott Spicer.

1Equipment loans for non-coursework are granted, though generally approved, at the discretion of the SMART media staff.
